Bring Your Child to Work Day – Future Workforce and Natural Gas

Bring Your Child to Work Day is a time-honored tradition each April where kids get to learn about what their parents actually do when they disappear from 9 to 5 each day. For natural gas utilities, the children of many employees might be surprised by what they find when they go to the office with their parents this April. The jobs and workforce needed to support the approximately 2.4 million miles of pipeline providing gas to more than 74 million customers in the U.S. are growing and changing as new technologies and advancements revolutionize the system.

AGA’s President and CEO, Karen Harbert, spoke on a panel hosted by Punchbowl News where she discussed what this change looks like on the ground. A new generation of Americans is starting to look toward their futures and the careers that could shape their lives, including those in the natural gas industry. And the jobs they’ll fill have more opportunities now than ever.

“These are not the jobs of your father’s utility,” said Harbert. “We’re looking for drone operators and satellite operators and people who can code. This industry continues to modernize and help our nation meet our ambitious energy and environmental goals, and a new slate of jobs is coming along with that innovation.”

That’s what makes Bring Your Child to Work Day so special for the natural gas industry. It’s not just about showing kids where their parents work – it’s about opening their eyes to the possibilities for their own futures.

Whether it’s seeing advanced leak-detection tools in action, hearing about how utilities are using data to better serve communities, or watching how field teams ensure safe and reliable gas service for customers, future generations are getting a glimpse into careers that are both meaningful and full of opportunity.

So, this Bring Your Child to Work Day, talk with your kids about the possibilities for their future as they grow up – and keep in mind that natural gas utilities can offer exciting, engaging, and innovative opportunities for a wide variety of young people.
