American Gas Association Statement on President Trump’s Upcoming Address to Congress

WASHINGTON – American Gas Association President and CEO Karen Harbert released the following statement in anticipation of President Trump’s upcoming Address to Congress:

“Energy security is national security, and our ability to provide affordable, safe and reliable natural gas through our robust North American natural gas delivery system is critical to keeping our nation safe and enabling the economy of the future. America’s natural gas industry shares President Trump’s commitment to unleashing American energy to provide a more affordable, safe and economically competitive future for Americans. This administration has already taken great strides to safeguard access to natural gas for Americans and protecting choice around the appliances accessible in the market. We look forward to continuing to work alongside him and his administration to achieve our mutual goals now and into the future,” said Harbert.

“As U.S. trade policy continues to evolve, the American Gas Association is dedicated to working with the President and his administration to mitigate any disruption to our energy system and ensure access to affordable and reliable natural gas for all Americans.”

The American Gas Association shared an open letter with President Trump, his administration and Members of the 119th Congress ahead of the inauguration, outlining five important steps the industry can collaborate on to realize America’s full energy potential, drive the economy and jobs of the future and protect our national security. Strong government partnerships and meaningful permitting reform are essential to preventing delays in energy projects, maintaining effective cybersecurity and pipeline protections, and supporting America’s economic future. Natural gas has been and will continue to be the cornerstone of America’s economy and energy independence. The U.S. possesses 3,353 trillion cubic feet of technically recoverable domestic natural gas resources representing more than 100 years of supply. The natural gas industry is committed to investing, building and innovating for the families and businesses who depend on safe, affordable, and reliable energy every minute of every day.

Nine percent of U.S. natural gas supplies are currently sourced from Canada according to data from the Energy Information Administration. An early analysis of a 10% tariff on Canadian natural gas indicates potential impacts totaling at least $1.1 billion in additional costs to American consumers per year. The effects would be especially pronounced in states where the natural gas system is most heavily integrated across the border with Canada, including Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. AGA will continue to monitor the impacts of tariffs and work with its member companies to clarify policy as it evolves.
