  • Spring is here! As the weather warms and we start to see cold snaps in the rearview mirror, using natural gas in your home can provide opportunities to save energy and save on your energy bill.

With temperatures trending up, it may be time to lower the temperature on your natural gas water heater. A lower temperature means less natural gas consumed and a lower utility bill at the end of the month. The warmer weather also means your natural gas furnace won’t have to work as hard to keep your home comfortable, saving you money each month. Depending on where you live, you might even be shutting down your furnace entirely until the next cold season. It’s important to make sure to work with a licensed professional to ensure this is done safely and correctly. Make sure you’re also paying attention to your furnace filters – those filters have been through a full winter heating season, and it’s important to make sure they are in good shape and don’t need replacing!

Outside of the house, sunny days might make you consider starting a garden, planting trees or bushes or putting in that landscaping feature you’ve been dreaming of. These projects are an essential part of the spring season, getting ready for months of fun in the sun this summer. No matter how large or small the excavation project is, if you’re digging then you need to take the proper steps to be sure that you’re not going to hit any buried infrastructure, like natural gas lines and other utilities.

To help ensure that all utility lines are marked before you begin digging, be sure to call 811. Calling 811 connects you with local resources to get professional locators sent to mark your home’s gas lines with paint or flags. It’s fast, free, and important for safe digging. It will only take a few minutes of your time and is a great way to head off any potential accidents, saving you hundreds in any potential property damage and keeping everyone involved protected.

These small but important steps are all great ways to not only get ready for spring, but also save money and keep yourself and your family safe.
